Protect Your Peace: Reflections with Dr. Robin L. Smith on Grief, George Floyd, and Collective Healing
Why your nervous system matters as much as your activism—and how to stay well while staying aware.
In this week’s episode of The Color Between the Lines, I have a powerful and deeply personal conversation with Dr. Robin L. Smith.
You may recognize her from her many appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show—a trusted voice who’s helped millions navigate emotional trauma and healing. She’s a psychologist, speaker, and co-author of the newly released book The Invisible Ache, written with Emmy-winning actor Courtney B. Vance.
She agreed to speak with me on the anniversary of George Floyd’s death—a moment that, for many of us, marked more than just a headline. It was a rupture in our collective emotional timeline.
Dr. Smith didn’t just offer commentary—she offered guidance.
“My mother was 98—vibrant and powerful. She passed just days after George Floyd. Her service was on the same day as his: June 9th.”
How Do We Keep Going?
What struck me most in our conversation was Dr. Smith’s deep belief in protecting your peace—especially your nervous system.
We are bombarded with negative headlines and relentless political attacks. And the temptation to stay “plugged in” can leave us emotionally—and physically—worn down.
“Knowing when to engage, and how to engage, literally affects your body,” she said.
“You can’t help anyone if you’re emotionally injured, shut down, or sick.”
And I believe she’s right.
Here’s What I Took Away
I believe each of us can contribute to healing—personally and collectively. But we must engage in ways that are sustainable, intentional, and rooted in care.
Here are four ways I’m choosing to engage:
1. Engage Through Thought
Use meditation or journaling to stay emotionally balanced. Regular grounding keeps you from spiraling in a reactive world.
2. Engage With Your Body
Rest. Eat well. Honor your body as a partner in the work—not just a machine for productivity.
3. Engage Through Education
Stay informed, but don’t drown in doomscrolling. Find trusted sources. Learn where your voice and energy can matter most—without burnout.
4. Engage Through Community
You don’t have to do this alone. Join a community garden. Show up for a local board. Volunteer your voice or skills. Find others who see the world as you do—and grow together.
